Amazing August - another 11 ceilidhs!
August has turned out to be an absolute cracker of a month, with some incredible weddings, a couple of raucous parties, and a fair few miles on the road for the band too. Here's a wee recap of our ceilidhs from this month.
We started off at Emily & Michael's wedding at Boturich Castle near Loch Lomond. This is a truly stunning location on the eastern banks of Loch Lomond; the views are truly brilliant! We really like playing in their pavilion, which is open on a couple of sides so the views certainly aren't missed when the guests are inside. Emily & Michael booked our 4-piece band, and we managed to get a wee video of us playing live - amazing crowd and dancing all night!
The next day, we were down in Melrose to play at Borders General Hospital Mess - a really fun night with some excellent dancing, and we wish the crowd all the best on their new jobs!
The next weekend saw us playing at two weddings: the first was at Errol Park in Perthshire for Greg & Anna's big day. This is a venue that we know really well, and have ceilidh'd at a lot over the years. It's a brilliant, rustic space which makes for a really unique space for dancing. Greg & Anna's crowd were absolutely amazing and totally up for the ceilidh all night, which made the whole wedding so fun.
Next, we were back at 1599 at the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow for Catriona & David's wedding. Fantastic crowd and lovely dancing all-round - 1599 is a really great venue to play at; always a pleasure to be back!
The following week, we were making our first of two August visits to the Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh. We were really happy to be playing at Graham's 70th birthday. It was a really fun, energetic ceilidh at the Caledonian Hall at RBGE.
The next day, we were on a long road trip to Yorkshire to play at the extremely glamorous Rise Hall for Hannah & Sean's wedding. This venue is simply gorgeous, and Hannah & Sean's crowd certainly didn't disappoint either. For most of them, this was their first time at a ceilidh, and they really took it with great energy and made it a very exciting set for us. Hannah & Sean booked our 5-piece band; take a look at this amazing Dashing White Sergeant!
The next weekend, we had a great 3-in-a-row run of ceilidhs. The first of these was a regular event for us: Glasgow University's International Freshers! We've played at this event for around 5 years now, and it's always extremely fun to call dances to such a large number of ceilidh newbies :)
Following the Glasgow Uni Freshers event, we were off to Forgan's Restaurant in St Andrews for Amy & Tom's wedding. This intimate space was completely perfect for their guests, and it was made even more fun in that around half of them had never danced a ceilidh before too.
The final of this run of three ceilidhs was our return to Royal Botanic Gardens of Edinburgh, this time for Catriona and Jamie's joint birthday party! This time we were up in the Gateway Restaurant, which is a really brilliant space for a party. Catriona & Jamie's party was really great; they clearly have some brilliant friends and family who turned our to help them celebrate their 18th and 21st birthdays!
Following this run of three, we had a few days off to recover before we were up the road to Laurencekirk in Aberdeenshire for Mary & Ben's wedding. They chose to get married at Drumtochty Castle - a venue we've played at often, and is a lovely intimate space for a ceilidh.
We also played at the ceremony during the day too: Mary and Ben opted for our 2 fiddles and keyboard option, with us playing some Scottish tunes as people came into the wedding, accompanying the hymns, and playing for the signing of the register. When it got to the ceilidh, Mary & Ben's crowd again hadn't done a ceilidh before, so we had a great time calling the dances for them.
The final ceilidh of August was a really special one for us - my cousin Shona got married to her fiance Jens! Both myself and my brother Scott (the drummer in It's No' Reel) were so happy to be able to play at their special day. Shona & Jens got married at Mansfield Traquair, which again is a venue that we know extremely well - it's rather glamorous and a fantastic place for a really great wedding reception and party.
Jens is Norwegian, so half the crowd (again!) had never done a ceilidh before - they absolutely loved it! It really was such a great time to teach the dances to these new ceilidh-goers. Congratulations Shona & Jens - enjoy your honeymoon!
So, another amazing month of ceilidhs. We really, really enjoyed it, especially as so many people this month had never done a ceilidh before. September is upon us, and we're starting off in England at Low House near Carlisle!
